M-Files for Manufacturing is a document management solution for organizations that design, build, and maintain engineered products and assets. It brings engineering document governance (transmittals, change control, and revision management) into one purpose-built, pre-configured solution built on the M-Files platform.

M-Files is not a PLM replacement. Most PLM systems are built for engineering and manage the design record well, but leave Quality, Compliance, and Supply Chain teams working outside the system, in email, shared drives, and spreadsheets. M-Files for Manufacturing governs the document review, approval, and exchange process: the drawings, specs, and SOPs that changed, who signed off, and who received them, connecting to the product data already in your PLM without replacing it.

Engineering teams need to prove, at any point, who changed a controlled document, who reviewed it, and who it was issued to. Without a governed system, engineers approve changes against conflicting versions arriving by email, and Document Controllers reconstruct transmittal registers and audit trails from spreadsheets and email archives before every inspection. M-Files for Manufacturing replaces that with one governed, SLA-tracked record.

A creator raises a Change Package against one or more controlled documents, capturing the reason for change and its impact document by document. The package moves through multi-discipline review, a first sign-off gate authorizing the change itself, document revision, and a second sign-off gate approving each individual document before release. Only then are the revised documents promoted and released, with full traceability.

Authors assemble outbound transmittal packages, with a cover sheet, classification, reviewer, distribution list, due date, and delivery method, and issue them either through a governed M-Files Hubshare hub or by tracked manual email. Recipients confirm receipt or return a rejection, closing the distribution loop with a full audit trail either way. Inbound transmittals from suppliers and contractors are logged and tracked against what was expected.

Does M-Files for Manufacturing give external suppliers or contractors access to our internal systems?
No. External delivery runs through M-Files Hubshare, a permission-isolated portal. Suppliers and contractors see only their own transmittals, never your internal vault.

Because documents, changes, and transmittal exchanges are structurally connected rather than scattered across systems, they form a governed, permission-aware foundation that AI, including Microsoft Copilot, can reason over reliably. As AI agents inside CAD, PLM, and ERP tools produce changes faster, a governed vault becomes the system that can answer "which revision is official?"
